There are some tips to help you keep your heating system energy efficient.  Insulating your house will reduce your heating needs.  The size of the burner you use may be larger than your house needs.  You can reduce the size of the burner to about 20 percent by converting the oil burner into a gas burner.  Keeping the burners and air shutters dust-free will enable better gas flow.  Before the arrival of the winter season each year, arrange for a maintenance work on your the heating system.  See that a heating contractor or the company which produces gas burners visits your house to inspect the gas burners at least once a year.  The combustion efficiency of the burners will be checked and the supply of air and gas will be adjusted.  The fuel pipe and the vent pipe will be cleaned.  Apart from this annual service, it is necessary that you clean the burner often.  Dust may inhibit the work of the blower.  Use a crevice tool to vacuum the air passages which allow air to the blower of the burner.  You should not sweep the dirt under the burner.  If there is an observation window provided with the boiler or furnace, check whether the flame is bright yellow in color and is smokeless.  In case you find the flame dark orange in color and sooty and the smoke found exiting through the chimney, call the heating system service personnel and get the burner adjusted.  If the size of the burner is not correct, it will create more heat than required.  If you add insulation to your house, the heating system needs will be reduced and the efficiency of the burner which is oversized will be reduced.  One of the remedies is to replace the nozzle and fix a nozzle with a smaller opening.  There is the flame retention model burner which can be replaced to the old burner.   It may seem expensive in the beginning, but using the heating system for years will prove to be economic.
